The Kelly-Strayhorn Theater

Stage
- Dimensions of the stage are 40 feet wide by 28 feet deep to backdrop.
- Dead hung house - No Fly System. Electrics Pipes are at 22 ft. Legs Pipes at 21ft.
- Proscenium is 20 feet high.
- Distance from bottom of overhead I-beams to stage floor is 25 ft., 6 inches.
- Side Legs are 21 feet high; there are 4 “wings” on each side.
- Wing space is 10 feet from onstage edge of Leg to the wall on each side.
- The Cyc and the Black Scrim are 22 feet high. Fixed location, not movable.
- Loading dock is Stage Left, 5 feet above street level (no lift).
- Stage is Wheelchair accessible via gently-graded ramp from auditorium.
Auditorium
- Auditorium is “General Admission” with an Orchestra seating area and raised Loge seating area behind: seats and rows are NOT numbered or lettered.
- Seating Capacity 341, plus 8 ADA Seating Slots for wheelchairs; thus, 349 total.
- 149 seats in Orchestra area, plus 8 ADA spaces; 192 seats in Loge, no ADA spaces.
- The Loge is accessed via steps. Not Wheelchair accessible.
- The Orchestra is accessed via a very slightly inclined ramp – Wheelchair accessible.
Dressing Rooms
- The 2 dressing rooms hold approximately 8 people each comfortably, with 8 chairs in each.
- There are 2 unisex Bathrooms backstage. One is handicapped-accessible.
- There are no showers in the dressing room area, as of this writing.

- The above equipment is configured in a House Light Plot arrangement, which is patched, colored, and ready to use. Licensee may alter the House Light Plot, but must restore it with own labor and at own expense immediately after event.
Personnel
- The Kelly-Strayhorn supplies a Technical Director to supervise all work and all activities performed by Licensee in the Theater. The TD functions in a supervisory capacity and is not an assignable member of Licensee’s crew. Technical Director will run Sound or Lighting for event, and may be able to run both if cues are simple. Discuss with Technical Director.
- No other crew personnel provided by Kelly-Strayhorn Theater – all functioning backstage crew must be provided by Licensee for own event.
- Kelly-Strayhorn provides House Manager, 2 Security Guards in Lobby/Front of Theater, and provides for the collection of demographic information from incoming audience members (zip codes). Licensee is not at liberty to dispense with the collection of demographic information. Said information is available to Licensee after event for no extra fee.
Times
- Theater is available for Licensee activities starting at 8:00 am
- All work on rehearsal days shall end by 11:00pm, and all performances shall end by 11:30pm. See License Agreement for governing clauses.
Extra Fees
(Please see Usage Procedures and Rates for additional details.)
- If Licensee desires additional security services (assignable as to function and location by Licensee), KS will provide through our own security service. Licensee will be billed for any additional requested services, at current cost to Kelly-Strayhorn. These fees are must be paid with deposit (see License Agreement.)
- Licensee must provide a Certificate of General Liability Insurance, or must purchase Tenant Liability Insurance from the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater on a per-performance day basis. See “Rental Procedures” for details.
- Harlequin "Studio" Brand Dance Floor priced extra per engagement.
- Video projector priced extra per engagement.
- Movie Screen priced extra per engagement.
- Piano priced extra for one tuning per engagement.
- City of Pittsburgh Fire Watch – Mandatory for any use of pyrotechnics, open flame, or smoking onstage as part of artistic performance or event. Please contact theater management to discuss current City of Pittsburgh pricing.
Available for Use
- A 50’ x 20’ Lobby Space
- 4 tables 6’ long by 2’6” wide. Tables may be used either backstage or in lobby, but only 4 available. Additional tables (for receptions, etc.) must be provided by Licensee.
- 10 Folding Chairs
- No Easels available: Licensee must provide if desired.
Special Features
- Kelly-Strayhorn Event phone information system, updated weekly. Licensees are provided with own listing, accessible by public, that will contain information about the particular event or performance. Licensee must provide all accurate event information in writing.
- Kelly-Strayhorn Website (www.kelly-strayhorn.org) with a schedule and description of events plus Licensees’ ticketing information. Licensee must provide event information in writing.
- Two placard cases for event posters at entryway to Theater. Licensee shall share space in these cases with any and all other events, as determined by Kelly-Strayhorn. Licensee is guaranteed poster space in at least one of the two cases, beginning two weeks before first performance of engagement. Poster placement earlier is possible, depending on other Licensees and available window space. Case will accommodate two 18” w X 24” h posters or one 34” w X 52” h poster. Posters can be NO WIDER than 34" (thirty-four inches) MAXIMUM, AND NO TALLER than 52" (fifty-two inches) MAXIMUM.
- As an additional service to the organizations using the Kelly-Strayhorn, we will print large-format posters for our own poster cases promoting your event. To do this we will require the design of your poster submitted to us electronically (via email or on CD) and meeting the following specifications:
- Poster print size:
- Width: 24" minimum, 36" maximum
- Height: 52" maximum
- Image resolution: 300 DPI minimum
- File format: Any type readable in Adobe Photoshop (including PDF, JPG, TIFF, PSD)
Please note: We are not a printing service, and cannot provide additional posters beyond the 2 for display in our own windows.
Also: we can NOT reproduce Word documents or flyers designed only for 8.5" x 11" (letter-size) printing.
Miscellaneous
- The Licensee is permitted to sell concessions in lobby. No food or drink may be brought into the auditorium.
- Alcoholic beverages may be served to Licensee’s clientele under specific conditions. See License Agreement. Please discuss in advance.
- Licensees are permitted to bring in their own technical or production equipment as long as such is approved by the Technical Director prior to event.
