Kelly Strayhorn
Theater announces a call for applicants for the 2012 Next Stage Residency Program. The Next Stage Residency supports the creation of new work by choreographers. NExxt Stage gives talented choreographers the opportunity to explore and develop new material in the historic and beautiful Kelly Strayhorn Theater.
Application Deadline: November 18, 2011. Selected choreographers receive a one-week creative residency with a presentation showing of the work at the end of the residency week. Choreographers are required to participate in all residency activities.
Now in its fourth year, Next Stage Residency has premiered two new works developed in residency here: Kyle Abraham’s The Radio Show and Sidra Bell’s REVUE. Kelly Strayhorn Theater has presented 35 innovative dance makers to over 300 audience members in three seasons. As part of our KST Presents series, our presentations are curated programs licensed to facilitate dialogue and exchange between artists and audiences. Designed to encourage risk taking and innovation, we present a broad range of contemporary dance styles and perspectives. Past choreographers include: Willi Dorner (Pittsburgh Premiere), Kate Watson Wallace (Pittsburgh Premiere), Seyrashi Dey (Premiere), Edisa Weeks, Makoto Hirano, Staycee Pearl (Premiere), Greer Reed Jones & many others.
CREATIVE RESIDENCY (January 23, 2012 – January 28, 2012)
The Next Stage Residency includes six days of creative rehearsal time (3-5 hours daily/choreographer) and a work-in-progress showing on Saturday, January 28, 2012. This is a creative residency and we encourage choreographers to use this time as a workshop for both creative and choreographic exploration. For the 2012 Residency, up to two choreographers will be selected to share the week.
Selected choreographers will receive a $1000 honorarium. The Residency will include lighting design support and one two-hour technical rehearsal. A photographer will document the week and the showing. The week will also include video documentation of the showing available to the artist. Housing & meals are available for visiting choreographers.
Please note: Due to the shared format of the presentations, complex scenic and/or design elements are discouraged. Light cues are limited and under the direction of the KST Production Manager.
KST MOVES 2011 (September 7-8, 2012)
One choreographer will receive a commission to present a work as part of the KST Moves Fall Dance Series 2012. The selected choreographer will receive: $1500 stipend, 30 hours of rehearsal time in the theater (September 5-8, 2012), lighting design (if needed), one on one sessions with an artistic advisor (selected by KST) and presentation of a complete work in September 7 & 8, 2012.
