Technical Director
The Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh, PA is hiring a full-time Technical Director responsible for overseeing all productions in KST performances spaces, including but not limited to Kelly Strayhorn Theater and the Alloy Studios. This position reports directly to the Production Manager and supervises. This is a full-time, salaried position. The T.D. will supervise and regulate crew activities and personnel. The ideal candidate is a creative problem solver with excellent leadership and communication skills.
The Technical Director at Kelly Strayhorn Theater is also the building supervisor for KST venues (including the theater at 5941 Penn Avenue and The Alloy Studios at 5530 Penn Avenue).
As building supervisor, the TD is responsible for the safe and proper operation of all our facilities and equipment, and as such manages outside contractors to handle HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and the elevator, while taking care of minor repairs as needed.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Works closely with Production Manager to execute the technical needs of all productions at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater;
- Maintains safety standards for all working equipment in the facility including security, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting systems, emergency signage, fire extinguishers, personnel lifts, & emergency plans.
- Maintains and operating lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music and other productions and projects.
- Orients and oversees renters and visiting productions in regards to safety and technical regulations in the facility.
- Assists Production Manager with fiscal reconciliation of each presentation/event in terms of technical labor and materials.
- Attends workshops, and conferences other continuing education events to maintain a current working knowledge of technical theater technology, standards and safety practices.
Requirements: Candidates should have at least 5 years work experience in the performing arts and be well versed in sound, video, lighting, stage management, and stage construction techniques. Sound engineering experience required. Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential.
